Biography/History

In 1896 the Milwaukee Jewish Mission was established by Lizzie Black Kander in borrowed quarters of Temple B'ne Jeshurun and Temple Emanu-El. In 1907 the Mission was replaced by “The Settlement” located in its own building in the Jewish ghetto. A new enlarged site was purchased circa 1911 that became known as the Abraham Lincoln House until 1930, when the Milwaukee Jewish Center was started in quarters on Milwaukee Street. In circa 1951 it moved to its present Prospect Avenue location and with a new building in 1954 became the Jewish Community Center of Milwaukee.

Scope and Content Note

The Jewish Community Center of Milwaukee Records are arranged in alphabetical files and two scrapbooks. Included are the 1956 Articles of Incorporation and By-laws, policy statements, minutes of board of directors and executive committee meetings and of annual meetings, and a 1960-1961 Study of Group Needs of the Jewish community.

The two scrapbooks, 1931-1944, contain newspaper clippings from Milwaukee newspapers and programs about Center activities. These clippings are in a deteriorating condition and are very fragile.
