Biography/History

Anthony J. King, Milwaukee labor leader, socialist, and public servant, was born in Random Lake, Wisconsin, December 29, 1894. He left school at the age of fourteen to become an apprentice steamfitter in Milwaukee. In 1928, he was elected secretary-treasurer of the Plumbers and Gasfitters Union, Local #75, A.F.L. In 1942, he was appointed as the business agent for this same union local.

During the 1930s Mr. King was active in the affairs of the Socialist party in Milwaukee and became a candidate on the Socialist ticket for offices in the municipal and county governments. Other positions held by Mr. King included membership on the National War Labor Board, Sixth Region, 1943-1945; membership on the Milwaukee Board of School Directors, 1951-1957; and as an appointed member of the Milwaukee Public Museum's Board of School Directors, 1961-1965.

Mr. King died in November, 1965, and was survived by his wife, two married daughters, and one son, Gordon.

Scope and Content Note

The Anthony J. King Papers are arranged in four series: War Labor Board Cases; Plumbers and Gasfitters Union, Local #75; the Milwaukee Board of School Directors; and General Subject Files. Within each series the folders are arranged alphabetically, while materials within each of the folders are arranged chronologically.

The War Labor Board Cases, 1943-1945, contain briefs presented to the Board of the Sixth Region concerning Wisconsin corporations. These appear in the collection under the titles of the companies involved.

The Plumbers and Gasfitters Union, Local #75, AFL-CIO, series includes union news and business, building codes, progress reports, bulletins, welfare benefits, and election results. There are also four volumes of registrations and minutes of this union, 1892-1912.

Between 1950 and 1957, Mr. King was elected to the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. Bulletins and files on building programs, school elections, teachers' unions, and teacher welfare benefits relating to the work of the Board are grouped in one series.

The General Subject Files contain clippings and printed matter relating to unions, clubs, and political organizations in Milwaukee; news, plans, and architectural reports of the Milwaukee Public Museum Board; and speeches and election results relating to the Socialist Party in Milwaukee.
