Biography/History

The South Side Business Men's Club of Milwaukee was organized by businessmen of Polish ancestry in 1936 “to protect, promote, and stimulate a better feeling in civic life of members and the community,” to promote the business ventures of all members, and to work for legislation beneficial to members and the community. Although the membership was of Polish ancestry, the Club's monthly meetings were conducted in English. The Club participated in various community service and fund-raising projects in conjunction with other Milwaukee charities and service organizations; among these in particular were street and highway improvements on the South Side of Milwaukee, and the annual Don Bosco High School Athletic Banquet, sponsored by the Club.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of microfilmed minutes of the Club's board of directors (1937-1980, with several gaps); biographies of club members, arranged alphabetically by last name; the constitution and by-laws; and membership rosters. In paper form are correspondence and memoranda, many of which are printed notices of meetings and similar routine items; financial receipts and disbursements, 1953-1956, and miscellaneous; a history of the club, circa 1956, with a list of past presidents; and membership and dues rosters and applications. Records of the Don Bosco High School Banquet Committee and banquet include minutes of meetings, programs, and a few invoices and receipts. For many years the minutes of the Club and the banquet committee were kept by Anthony Szymczak.
