Biography/History

The Fountain Lutheran Church was founded in 1878 as a Norwegian Evangelical congregation. Reverend J. E. Nord was installed as first pastor in 1880 and a church was built in 1881. This building was replaced by a new and larger church completed in 1901. At various time periods the Fountain Church was joined as a parish with churches in the Town of Plymouth (? -1948), Town of Greenwood (1929-1948), Mauston (1944-1948), and Hustler (1952- ?).

Scope and Content Note

The records consist of two volumes of sacramental and other records, two volumes maintained by the Fountain Lutheran Church Ladies Aid, and four photographs. The sacramental record books document baptisms, confirmations, marriages, funerals, and communions, and include membership records, statistics, and annual reports. Early records are in Norwegian.

The Ladies Aid records consist of a history book and a photo album. The history book begins with 1936 essays on the beginnings of the group about 1880 and the beginnings of the Muskego Norwegian Lutheran Church (the first Norwegian congregation in Wisconsin); and continues with annual summaries of each year's activities through 1960. The photo album contains captioned photographs dated to 1957; included are pictures of pastors and their families, Ladies Aid officers, and members. Frequently the captions were fading and consequently did not reproduce well on the microfilm. Selected photos from this album showing churches and parsonages have also been copied for the Historical Society's Iconography collection.
