Abstract:
Papers of an editorial cartoonist for the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA, Inc.), the New York Herald Tribune, the Chicago Daily News, and the Chicago Sun-Times. The papers document the publication of his book, Zinga Zinga Za!, an anthology of his cartoons; his sometimes-contentious relationship with the public and the politicians he skewered; his philanthropic work with the Fresh Air Fund; and his relationships with his fellow cartoonists and writers, such as Herblock, Studs Terkel, Mike Royko, Bill Mauldin, and Mort Walker. The Get Well material includes original cartoon art from his peers. There is also a large volume of correspondence with Adlai Stevenson, the staff of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and President Richard Nixon, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. His personal relationship with LBJ after the President left office is also documented.
