Abstract:
Papers of Samuel McDowell Reid, a planter of Lexington, Virginia, who succeeded his father, Andrew Reid, as clerk of the Rockbridge County court. The papers consist of receipts and promissory notes, accounts for the plantation and mill and for estates of which he was executor, record of charges made to him for blacksmithing and iron repairs, and stock certificates and reports for the James River and Kanawha Company. Also included are personal account books of his father and of his father-in-law, William B. Hare of Lynchburg; financial records, 1808-1818, for the Ann Smith Academy at Lexington; and records of slaves sold on behalf of Washington College.
