Abstract:
Papers, mainly 1944-1981, of Harry R. Poole, a former president (1976-1979?) and executive vice-president (1955-1976) of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America (AMCBWNA) and, after their merger with the Retail Clerks International Association in 1979, a vice-president of the United Food and Commercial Workers. The papers best document his pre-1958 career as organizer and international vice-president of District 2 of the AMCBWNA, but there are some files for his later positions.

Scope and Content Note

The early files include correspondence, memoranda, reports, and clippings concerning organizing campaigns, grievances, and bargaining in District 2, as well as exchanges with many leaders in the International Union. Files about locals are particularly strong on Pennsylvania and Ohio. Also covered are relations with local and national grocers and local and national meat packers such as Armour and Swift & Company. There are similar district files of Bernard Quinn, president of the United Leather Workers International Union, inherited by Poole after their merger in 1951, as well as information on organizing campaigns concerning Endicott Johnson, Eberle Tanning Company, and other companies. There are also files on relations with the International Fur and Leather Workers Union, with which the AMCBWNA merged in 1955, and on joint organizing with the Teamsters dating from the mid-1950s. Files as executive vice president and president of AMCBWNA include chronological correspondence and subject files on the IBP (Iowa Beef Processors) strike, management of the Local 88 trusteeship, a committee that studied union operations in 1976, and other topics. UFCW records consist primarily of circular letters concerning pensions, 1979 and 1980 executive board minutes, and a procedures manual.

Arrangement of the Materials

Researchers should note that most files are arranged in reverse chronological order.
