Records documenting the development and technical operation of the Interlake Pulp and Paper Company, an Appleton, Wisconsin, paper mill owned by the Manufacturing Investment Company, and later, the Interlake Pulp and Paper Company, both of New York.

The collection consists of three major parts: a detailed description of the sulphite process and operations at the Appleton, Wisconsin and Madison, Maine mills (1890-1891); correspondence (1890-1916) on daily operations with a focus on water power and access to water; and reports on mill operations (1891-1912). Reports to plant superintendents, some of which were authored by scientific management expert Frederick W. Taylor, include results of experiments, tests, and measurements of equipment and processes, trip reports, sample contracts, drawings, specifications, and a photograph of Herman Wildhagen. The records from 1890-1900, in particular, reflect the practical application of some of Taylor’s theories.

This collection was received in multiple parts from the donor(s) and is organized into 2 major parts. These materials have not been physically interfiled and researchers might need to consult more than one part to locate similar materials.
