Abstract:
Records of the Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association (WISAA) and its predecessor, the Wisconsin Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Asssociation (WCIAA), whose purpose was to foster competition among the state’s private secondary schools. Included are annual statistics for the nine boys' sports (bulk 1950s) and seven girls' sports (bulk 1980s-1990s) recognized by WISAA documenting state champions, scores of tournament and championship games, records, coaches' names, and the names of some of the participating athletes. Other records document the history of the organization, its dissolution in 2000, and the demographics of member schools.

Biography/History

First established in 1957 as the Wisconsin Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Association (WCIAA), the name was changed in 1968 to reflect the inclusion of non-Catholic private schools. Following the 1999-2000 school year, WISAA voted to dissolve and member schools joined the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA).

Scope and Content Note

The records for boys' basketball go back as far as 1928, the first year private statewide Catholic school tournaments were held, but most records of boys sports date from the 1950s. Beginning in 1975, WISAA sanctioned girls' basketball but most of the records for girls' sports date from 1980-1999. Also included are newspaper clippings reporting the dissolution of WISAA, various WISAA publications, constitutions and bylaws, championship guides from the late 1990s, and demographics of participating schools such as size, nickname, colors, etc. Additionally, there is one videotape, produced during WISAA’s last season of competition, documenting the history of the association.
