Biography/History

Alfred Ford was a surveyor in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He was born in Haverhill, New Hampshire, August 27, 1829. In 1855, he moved to Trempealeau County and two years later built a home in the Village of Trempealeau. He was married in 1866 to Lizzie Heald, who was originally from Norridgewock, Maine. Lizzie taught school in Trempealeau for several years. The couple had four children; Clif, Nora, William, and Fred. From 1876 to his death in 1883, Ford owned a furniture business.

Scope and Content Note

These papers consist primarily of surveyors records from Trempealeau County, with a few from Eau Claire and La Crosse counties. Box 1 contains field notes and sketches of sectional surveys done by Ford in the Townships 18-27 North, Ranges 7-10 West. Box 2 contains the original plats which Ford probably used to guide him when surveying specific sections. It would appear that Ford surveyed free-lance largely for private citizens for taxation and sale purposes. The papers also contain some miscellaneous financial records concerning household and business expenditures and surveying fees. There is also one folder which contains personal miscellany, i.e. an insurance policy, a few pieces of correspondence, and memorabilia.
