Abstract:
Records of the Young Women's Christian Association in Green Bay-De Pere (YWCA), 1919-2007, consisting of founding documents, annual meeting minutes, financial reports, committee and programming materials, and publications, scrapbooks and photographs. The campaign to raise money for the construction of a new building for the organization, which opened in 1962, is well-documented, as are the youth programs, particularly the summer camps White Gables and Wethanketha. Correspondence is sparse. A film of the groundbreaking for the new building and a tape recording of children's performance in the 1990s are also included.

Biography/History

The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) first met in Green Bay in May 1919. The first officers were: Euphemia Jane Kay, president; Mrs. J.H. Taylor, vice president; Mrs. W.P. Wagner, treasurer; Jessie Davis, recording secretary; and Mrs. S.H. Cady, corresponding secretary. By November plans to remodel the old post office at Adams and Cherry streets were complete. A cafeteria was opened and programs for girls, including chorus, physical education, and citizenship classes, began in 1920. Camp Wethanketha opened in 1924 and closed in 1929. A subsequent camp, White Gables, opened in 1931 and operated until it was sold in 1961. In 1941, De Pere was formally added to the group’s name. After a fundraising campaign, the group built a new building in 1962, and opened a fitness center in 1982.
