Biography/History

The predecessor of the New London Cooperative was the New London Farmers' Exchange Company, organized in 1919 as a marketing cooperative for agricultural products such as grain, flour, and potatoes. The New London Cooperative Exchange apparently replaced the Farmers' Exchange in 1941 to market, buy, sell, and store agricultural products. By the 1950's, the merchandise inventory of the Exchange listed seeds and fertilizer; grain and feed; hardware; farm machinery and repair parts; lime; cement; and coal. The Bi-County Consumers Cooperative Association was organized in March 1941 and handles petroleum products. In 1967 the New London Cooperative was formed by the merger of the New London Cooperative Exchange, Bi-County Consumers Cooperative Association, and the New London Farmers Cooperative Oil Company. The New London Cooperative joined the Cenex firm circa 1976.

Scope and Content Note

The New London Cooperative records document the activities of an agriculture and petroleum service and marketing cooperative from its inception in 1919 through a merger in 1967. The collection is fragmentary with substantial portions missing. According to the general manager, Norman Fenske, some records were probably destroyed in a fire in 1973. The collection has been arranged in the following four series to reflect the organization's name changes and a merger: NEW LONDON FARMERS' EXCHANGE COMPANY, NEW LONDON COOPERATIVE EXCHANGE, BI-COUNTY CONSUMERS COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION, and NEW LONDON FARMERS COOPERATIVE OIL COMPANY.

The records in these series consist of early administrative records, including a minute book (corporation record book) and stock certificate books; annual reports; a small amount of correspondence pertaining to sales and orders; merchandise inventories; and newspaper advertisements. The bulk of the material consists of financial records, primarily from the 1930's and 1950-1967, such as audit reports, cash book, journals, ledgers, check registers, payroll books, and overhead analysis sheets.
