Papers of Bates, a shipbuilder at Manitowoc, Wis., and Chicago, and authority on subjects connected with navigation, consisting of a number of blueprints, drawings, specifications, and plans for vessels; a few bills and receipts; letters to George C. Walker about his yacht; several muster rolls and letters relating to Bates' Civil War service in the 19th Wisconsin Infantry; and the manuscript of his “American Navigation; The Political History of Its Rise and Ruin” published in 1902.
