Biography/History
Valders Canning Company, founded September 26, 1913 by William F. Christel, Albert Schnurr, and Nic Filz, was at that time the largest company in Wisconsin that packed only peas. Six brands were packed at the company's main plant in Valders, and in factories located in Hilbert and St. Nazianz (the latter plant was sold in 1950). In addition, the company owned and operated a 400-acre farm adjacent to the village of Valders. Christel, a pioneer Wisconsin entrepreneur and inventor, was president of the company until his death in 1952, when the position was assumed by his son. The company was liquidated in 1963.
Scope and Content Note
The records pertain mainly to financial and legal concerns of the company from 1913 to 1963. (William F. Christel's personal papers may be found under the call number Green Bay Mss 69.) This collection is divided into three series: Administrative Records, Legal Records, and Financial Records.
ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS include a Corporation Record Book which documents the incorporation of the company, directors' and stockholders' meetings, and stock issues, 1913-1933. The LEGAL RECORDS series contains legal documents and correspondence, 1902-1963, of the company's land transactions in Wisconsin
and Texas. Additional folders contain legal records and correspondence concerning the purchase of trademarks, 1942, and the company's liquidation in 1963.
The extensive FINANCIAL RECORDS of the company include annual financial statements and a “plant ledger” which consists of fiscal- and calendar-year-end inventories, assets and liabilities, receipts and disbursements, and lists of stockholders.
