Scope and Content Note

The Eau Claire Rangers was the popular name for Company L, 2nd Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry in the Civil War. The main portion of the collection consists of an Order Book of the 2nd Regiment, while under the command of Colonel Thomas Stephens, November 1861-November 1864. Regimental orders relating to the daily routine of the Headquarters Camp such as schedules, drills, sanitation, discipline, etc. are recorded, as well as proceedings of several courts martial and orders for troop movements. There is no information on participation in combat.

Also included are two Muster Rolls of Company L, 2nd Volunteer Regiment of Wisconsin Cavalry, covering the periods April 13, 1863 to June 30, 1863 and April 30, 1864 to June 30, 1864. These rolls include approximately one hundred names of men mostly from the Eau Claire area who enlisted in 1861-1862 or re-enlisted at Red Bone, Mississippi in 1864. The information includes the date on which they were last paid and remarks such as discharge or death dates, hospitalization, etc. Also present is a morning report of Company L dated May 1864.
