Abstract:
Copies and excerpts of correspondence, diaries, and other papers of Josiah Harmar, a Pennsylvania officer during the American Revolution, who also served as Commander of the army on the Ohio frontier (1784-1791), and as adjutant general of Pennsylvania (1793-1799). Harmar led an unsuccessful expedition against the Shawnee and Miami in Ohio and Indiana in 1790.

Scope and Content Note

Harmar's papers includes material on events throughout the trans-Allegheny region--Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee as well as the region north of the Ohio River--and were loaned to Draper for copying in 1849-1850 by Josiah's son, William Harmar. Included are maps of Fort Steuben, Fort Franklin, the French Creek river (Pennsylvania), the area around the Big Beaver Creek (Pennsylvania), and Covalt's Station (Ohio).
