Correspondence belonging to Edward
Raftery during his term as president and chairman of the board of directors for United
Artists Corporation from December 12, 1941 to August 5, 1947. The series consists of
correspondence with the various departments and personnel of United Artists, theater owners,
producers and production companies, firms related to United Artists, and miscellaneous
reports and correspondence.

Biographical / Historical
Edward C. Raftery served in multiple positions during his association with United Artists:
he was assistant secretary from July 10, 1935 to September 8, 1938, secretary from September
8, 1935 to May 24, 1941, vice-president and assistant secretary from May 24, 1941 to
December 12, 1941, and president and chairman of the board of directors from December 12,
1941 to August 5, 1947. He was a member of the board of directors during all of these years
and served on the executive committee of United Artists from its origins in July 1935 to its
dissolution in 1938.
Raftery was a partner in the law firm of O'Brien, Driscoll and Raftery which served as
United Artists' general counsel and handled all of the corporation's legal affairs. He died
in May 1967.
