Abstract:

The May Shiga Hornback papers are primarily subject files that include correspondence, meeting minutes, instructional materials, and other records that document her activities as a nursing student and faculty member, and Chairperson of the University of Wisconsin Extension Department of Nursing. Shiga Hornback was actively involved various aspects of nursing education, but was most known for her involvement in nursing continuing education and nursing education via television and telephone dial services.

Mayko (May) Shiga Hornback was born to Henry Juro and Sumi Hirano Shiga on May 4, 1924 in Seattle, Washington. She attended public schools and Japanese school while she lived there. She enrolled in the nursing program at Seattle College (now Seattle University) in 1941. She was unable to finish her education at Seattle College due to President Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066, which ordered the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans. While Shiga Hornback's father was incarcerated, the rest of her family moved to Montana and then Chicago, Illinois to avoid incarceration.

She enrolled in the nursing program at St. Xavier's College in Chicago, but left after she married her husband, Vernon, in 1944 as married students weren't allowed in the nursing program. Her family moved to Pennsylvania and then to Madison, Wisconsin. She worked as a nursing aide at the Lakeview Tuberculosis Sanitarium. The staff there were so impressed with her nursing skills that she was encouraged to enroll in the nursing program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she received her Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1954.

After graduation, Shiga Hornback served as a staff nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Madison. In 1956 she was appointed as an instructor in the School of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she taught fundamentals of nursing and medical-surgical nursing.

She took a leave of absence from the School of Nursing to complete her Master's degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated in 1958. She returned to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and continued to teach in the School of Nursing.

In 1965, she joined the Department of Nursing in University Extension, where she directed continuing education courses presented over the Educational Telephone Network. During this time, she also completed her Ph.D in adult education in 1970 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In that same year, she received tenure as an associate professor and was appointed full professor in 1972. She served as Chair of the Department of Nursing in University Extension from 1972 to 1974 and then Associate Chair from 1974 to 1976.

She was a consultant for various national groups and companies producing nursing education films such as J.B. Lippincott Company, Video Nursing Inc., National Institutes of Health and the Hoffman-LaRoche Company.

She was also active in local, state, and national nursing organizations. She served as president of the Madison District Area Nurses Association (1968-1970), director of the Wisconsin Nurses' Association (1962-1965, 1970-1973), and a member of the American Nurses' Association's Commission on Nursing Education (1972-1974). She served as the first chairperson of the American Nurses' Association's National Accrediting Board for Continuing Education (1975).

She died of cancer on July 6, 1976 in Madison, Wisconsin. She is known as a pioneer in the development of innovative educational materials in nursing and one of the first to use television and telephone in teaching nursing. She was remembered by her colleagues as a creative teacher with a calm and practical approach and a strong supporter of civil and human rights.

She was posthumously awarded the Wisconsin Nurses' Association's first service award in 1976. Her family and colleagues established the May Shiga Hornback Scholarship for nurses seeking doctoral degrees in adult education. In 2011, she was among 12 former Japanese American students, who were forced to leave their studies in 1942, awarded honorary degrees by Seattle University.

The collection includes correspondence written and received by her, meeting minutes of organizations and committees she served, instructional materials used and created by her, documents related to projects she was part of or directed, and educational materials based on her research interests.
