The Jospeh Rossi collection contains documents related to the scholarly work and personal life of Professor Joseph Rossi. The collection includes Rossi's dissertation on Francesco De Sanctis and other academic work completed by Rossi, newspaper clippings, photographs, travel documents, and a diary. The collection also includes his obituary, eulogy given by his son, and a copy of the memorial resolution presented by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Faculty Senate after Rossi's death.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph Rossi (June 5, 1902-December 15, 1980) was born in the Abruzzo region of Italy. He attended the Royal Normal School in Italy before coming to the United States in 1923. He earned his B.S. (1928) and M.A. (1929) degrees at Columbia University and his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1934). He joined the faculty in the Department of French and Italian in 1934 and became a full professor in 1951. He left the University of Wisconsin-Madison to accept a position at the University of Arizona where he taught until his retirement in 1978.

Rossi wrote over 35 works on Italian literature and the cultural and historical influence of Italy on America. In 1969, he was knighted by the Italian government for his contributions in the field of Italian studies in the United States.

Scope and Contents

The Joseph Rossi collection contains Rossi's Ph.D. work and dissertation on Francesco de Sanctis; other academic works on Giuseppe Mazzini; diary and travel documents from his time in Italy as a Fullbright scholar; photographs from his son, Ennio Rossi's graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and himself; a letter between Rossi and the Head of Romance Languages at the University of Arizona; Joseph Rossi's obituary and memorial resolution presented by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Faculty Senate; eulogy given by his son, Ennio Rossi; and newspaper clippings related to Ennio Rossi's wedding and the Italian Club at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Collection materials were created between 1930 and 1981, and largely reflect his Ph.D. work and other academic interests during his time as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
