Abstract:

The Warren Woessner papers (1963-2019) contain materials from poet and co-founder of the 'Abraxas Magazine'. Woessner, an alum of UW-Madison, established the magazine in Madison in 1968 with fellow poet, James Bertolino, and worked as the senior editor for many years. He also wrote his own poems which were published independently and within other journals. The collection contains several decades of poems, drafts, and correspondence from Woessner.

Warren Woesnner was born on May 31, 1944, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He attended Cornell and recieved his BA in Chemistry in 1966. He went on to earn his PhD in Organic Chemistry from UW-Madison in 1971. During his time at Madison, Woessner co-founded the Abraxas Magazine with poet James Bertolino in 1968. He also founded the WORT-FM radio station and hosted its poetry program. He worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Miles Laboratories, Inc. from 1971 until 1978, when he went back to UW-Madison to pursue his JD. In 1981, Woessner recieved his JD.

Woessner moved to New York City in 1981 and worked as an Associate attorney in chemical prosecution and litigation at Kenyon and Kenyon. He moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1984, and continued as an Associate attorney at Merchant and Gould. He left the firm in 1993 to establish Schwegman Lundberg and Woessner where he currently works. It is one of the largest patent law firms in the country. His practice focuses on chemical patent law.

Woessner has published poetry since 1968. His works have been published in several periodicals and journals, such as 'The Midwest Quarterly', '5AM', 'Poetry Northwest', and 'Poetry'. He has published several poetry books with his most recent, "Clear All the Rest of the Way", in 2008.

The Woessner papers contain materials from Warren Woessner, a poet and cofounder of the Abraxas Magazine. Included in the collection are numerous poetry drafts and notes, personal correspondence and correspondence pertaining to both published works and individual poems, two notebooks of poetry and clippings, and various little magazine volumes with letters to Woessner. Additionally, there are reviews written by Woessner and some correspondence to Woessner concerning the Abraxas magazine. The collection also has photographs of Woessner from 1976 to 2007 and a handful of audio recordings of poetry readings given by Woessner.
