Biography/History
On April 15, 1947, Lillian Trager was born to William and Ida Trager. At age 11, her family spent six months in Nigeria which began her interest in the nation socially, economically, and politically. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and continued her education at the University of Washington. Her master's program research in 1971 was on migrant workers in California. She received her doctorate from the University of Washington as well, researching the economic systems in Nigeria. Her dissertation, entitled "Yoruba Markets and Trade: Analysis of Spatial Structure and Social Organization in the Ijesaland Marketing System," was published in 1976. Dr. Trager then traveled and spent time researching in the Philippines from 1978 to 1979, working with Dr. T.G. Mcgee at Australia National University and conducted related fieldwork through Ateneo de Manila University in Dagupan City, Philippines. Her career at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside began in 1975 when she was appointed as visiting assistant professor. She eventually became a tenured professor and was the chair of the Sociology-Anthropology Department from 1987 to 1989. She married Dick Ammann in 1977, and he traveled with her on multiple occasions. Dr. Trager continued her research in Nigeria, and she put together an exchange program that connected the UW-Parkside faculty with faculty from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), previously known as the University of Ife, in the Osun state of Nigeria. Professors from UW-Parkside taught in Nigeria, and Nigerian professors taught at UW-Parkside. Two of these professors were Dr. Richard Olaniyan and Agbo Folarin. Dr. Olaniyan taught in the History Department at Parkside. Agbo Folarin designed the mural Diversity of Creation Myths, which was presented and placed in Wyllie Hall of UW-Parkside in 1994. Both became close friends of Trager, and they visited each other many times throughout her life. After the exchange program, Trager worked alongside James Stills to put together a study abroad program for students. This gave them an opportunity to travel to Ghana. In 2001, Trager published her book, Yoruba Hometowns: Community, Identity, and Development in Nigeria, and she also created a video documentary on the subject. Dr. Lillian Trager was a professor of anthropology and sociology at UW-Parkside until her death from pancreatic cancer in 2006.
Scope and Content Note
This collection includes notes, sketches, diaries, published articles, slides, photographs, video and audiocassettes, and other material. These works provide researchers with a comprehensive body of material to examine the people as well as the economic and social environment of Nigeria, specifically the states of Osun, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and others. Material is also collected for areas outside of this region including the Philippines, California, and Southeastern Wisconsin. Also collected are general works and research notes on the populations on broader scale.
The first series, Research and Field Notes, includes notes, interviews, sketches, diaries, and other research material. They focus on Trager's day to day experiences while living, researching, and traveling across California, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Southeastern Wisconsin. The documents are both in her handwriting as well as typed, and they are her notes from her undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and professional research projects.
The second series, Academic Publications, includes academic journal articles, school papers, theses, and a dissertation. Many of these articles contain multiple versions showing revisions throughout time and their use in different venues. They focus on the research throughout her academic and professional career. Topics include, but are not limited to: California migrant workers, migration to the Philippines, family dynamics in the Philippines, economic activity throughout Africa, and hometown linkages in Nigeria.
The third series, Other Material, includes book reviews, lectures, two opinion letters to newspapers, grant proposals, recognitions of her contributions to publications, correspondence, and event information. The research covered by these works involve Nigeria, California, and Southeastern Wisconsin. They show Trager's connections with other university professors as well as her involvement in the community that she lived in.
The fourth series, Photographic Material, consists of photographs, negatives, and slides. These materials follow similar patterns to the research and field notes. They primarily focus on illustrating Trager's professional research in Nigeria; however, there is some photographic material that align with her research in the Philippines. There are also photographs regarding the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and UW-Parkside exchange along with research Trager did at this university during her trips to the city of Ife in Osun, Nigeria. From 1962 until 1987, OAU was known as the University of Ife. On May 12, 1987, the university's name changed to Obafemi Awolowo University. Photographs, negatives, and slides prior to 1987 depicting this university are labeled as the University of Ife.
The fifth series, Audio/Visual Material, includes videocassettes and audiocassettes. The videocassettes document Nigerian community celebrations, a coronation, interviews, workshops, and other subjects. These materials have the primary focus of Trager's extensive professional research in Nigeria with Yoruba connections to their hometowns. The audiocassettes include interviews, discussions, meetings, celebrations, and other sound. The Philippines research audiocassettes focus on the traditions and economic activity of the people. The Nigeria research audiocassettes are from her professional research and follow along with her research and field notes. They document interviews and complement the printed material in the collection.
Arrangement of the Materials
The Lillian Trager Collection is arranged in 5 series: Research and Field Notes, Academic Publications, Other Materials, Photographic Material, and Audio/Visual Material. Photographic material is arranged into four subseries: Doctoral Research in Nigeria, Professional Research in Nigeria, University Exchange Program, and Miscellaneous. Material is arranged alphabetically within series and subseries.
Audio/visual materials are arranged by format and thereunder alphabetically.
