This collection consists of documents found as part of the state of Malcolm D. Harbridge, including bonds and deeds involving prominent figures in early Racine and the Harbor Addition, documents concerning the history of Racine, and material related to the Harbridge and Spence families, including photographs and ephemera.

Biography/History

Frederick Harbridge, originally from England, moved to Racine in 1864 to work in the drug store established by Kidder and Harris in 1847. By 1881, Frederick had sole ownership of the business, the F. Harbridge Company, and had expanded to include a grocery.

Frederick's son Roy married Bertha L. Spence, daughter of J.W. Spence, a pioneer jeweler in Racine. Together they had three children, including Malcolm D. Harbridge. After Frederick's death in 1915, Roy served as president of the F. Harbridge Company until his reitrement in 1949, and also was the Dean of Racine Pharmacists until his death in 1958.

Scope and Content Note

This collection largely contains material related to early Racine histroy and figures, and some related specifically to the ancestors of Malcolm D. Harbridge.

Materials relating to the estates of Joseph Allsop and Edward Foster are included. A number of deeds, bonds, and morgages for land in Racine (specifically the Harbor Addition) are included, dating from 1843 to 1879. The collection contains portrait and school group photographs from the early 20th=centruy, as well as a photograph of J.W. Spence's Racine Jewelry Manufacturing Company store. Various ephemera relating to Racine is also present, including stock certificates, a history of the Welsh in Racine, and a souvenir from the grand opening of the Black Opera House in 1882.

Of particular note in this collection is a letter writen by Booker T. Washington, in which he asks Roy Harbridge for money to meet the end of year expenses for the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for the Training of COlored Young Men and Women.
