Biography/History

The Racine Labor Paper was a labor newspaper founded in 1941 under the direction of editor Loren Norman and which ran for 60 years until January 4, 2001. The paper was published weekly for many years but became a biweekly paper briefly before discontinuing publication. In the height of its publication, it had more than 25,000 subscribers but had dropped to 4,000 by 2001. The paper received numerous awards and recognition over the years as one of the best labor newspapers in the country.

Scope and Content Note

The collection falls into two general types of materials: photographs and negatives. The records are primarily photographs of local Racine events, union-related events, and individuals. The collection also contains several folders of negatives, a few newspaper articles, and a handful of cardboard, metal or vinyl photo printing tiles. Although the bulk of the collection falls between 1961-1979, several photographs date from circa 1922. Of particular interest is a set of negatives from Robert F. Kennedy’s visit to Kenosha in 1966 (Box 6, Folder 9).

Arrangement of the Materials

The collection is arranged alphabetically by record type, then subject, then chronologically.
