The collection comprises Berquist's work documenting the cultural heritage and folk music of Iron Range communities, and his work performing music and organizing folk music festivals in Chicago and Minnesota.

Organized into six series: I. School Materials, II. Organizational Materials, III. Slovenian Button Box Project Materials, IV. Subject Files, V. Music Materials, VI. Media. Series VI, Media, is further arranged by three subseries: 1. Sound recordings, 2. Slides, 3. Video.

John Berquist was a folklorist, musician and storyteller who worked primarily in Minnesota and Chicago. Born in 1947, Berquist studied cultural geography at Macalester College and, as a graduate student, at University of Minnesota. He worked as the Folk Arts Coordinator for the Minnesota State Arts Board and served as a consultant to the Smithsonian Institution's Folklife Program, music consultant for the Cousteau Society, hosted the folk music radio program Jackpine Jamboree, and produced several public radio documentaries. He was a scholar of Iron Range history, as well as Finnish American, Slovenian Button Accordion, lumberjack and union musical traditions. As a musician, Berquist wrote folk songs about miners, lumberjacks and the early Scandinavian and Slavic settlers in the Iron Range. In the 1970s, he composed "I like it in Duluth," which has been covered by several other bands. He performed in many groups including the Moose Wallow Ramblers, Nodding Wild Onions, South Side Swedes, Chicago Swedish Men's Choir, St. Paul Swedish Men's Choir, and the Heritage Company. He was active in the storytelling communities in Chicago and Minnesota, specializing in the telling of Ole and Lena jokes. Berquist helped organize numerous ethnic heritage festivals, including Laskiainen Festival, International Button Box Festival, and Ethnic Days at Ironworld USA (now Minnesota Discovery Center). As a labor organizer, he was active in the Chicago Local of the Industrial Workers of the World. He died May 12, 2016 in Eveleth, Minnesota.

Collection guide to the Down Home Dairyland collection [Online]

Series I, School Materials includes papers pertaining to Berquist's graduate studies and student teaching positions at the University of Minnesota in 1985 and 1986, much of which formed the basis for his Slovenian Button Box Project. Series II, Organizational Materials, documents Berquist's work with various folk and community organizations, and musical groups. Series III, documents the Slovenian Button Box Project, which grew out of Berquist's graduate studies, and resulted in a large body of papers, maps, research materials, sound recordings and photographs documenting Slovenian accordion players mainly from the Iron Ranges of northeastern Minnesota. Much of the materials from this project are available online as the "John Berquist Slovenian recordings collection." Series IV, Subject Files, includes information about Minnesota folk culture, musicians, musical instruments and local history. Series V, Music Materials, contains sheet music, lead sheets, lyric sheets, song lists and set lists organized by genre or by musical groups of which Berquist was a member. Among the music files are some of Berquist's original songs. Photographs are interspersed with respective files. Series VI, Media, comprises multiple formats from projects by Berquist, and others' projects he was involved with. The audiotape reels are the original source tape interviews and musical performances Berquist recorded for the Slovenian Button Box project. Slides include images from 1984 and 1985 for Slovenian Button Box Project, images of folkcraft artists, Scandinavian Folkfest in Detroit Lakes, Duluth Folk Festival, and an Ojibwe tribal gathering in Duluth, MN. The series includes a 2004 VHS videotape recording of Berquist performing with the South Side Swedes at the University of Chicago Folk Festival; a CD of songs performed by Phil Nusbaum; audiocassettes and LP of Berquist with various ensembles or solo performances.
