Biography/History

From 2012 to 2014, retired Milwaukee police officer Antonio G. Guajardo Jr. collected eleven interviews of Latinx officers, retired and active, as a part of a resurch study called the "Milwaukee Police Department: The Latino Police Experience". The purpose of the research study was to study the experiece of Latino Police Officers in the City of Milwaukee Police Department. In 2016, the interviews were donated to the UWM Archives, but consent forms for only three were given to the archives.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains 11 digital audio files of interviews from the Milwaukee Police Department: The Latino Police Experience, created between 2012 to 2014. Interviews vary between 10-75 minutes, depending on the interviewee. Topics include officers' educational background, prejudices faced both in getting trained as an officer as well as on the job, how being a Latinx police officer can have a positive affect on a predominantly Latinx community, and other experiences as an officer in the Milwaukee community.

Arrangement of the Materials

The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject. The interviewees whose consent forms are not in the archives are grouped into one unlisted entry to not reveal their identities.

Access Restrictions

Only three interviews, which have both an IRB and a consent form, are accessible to the public. The rest are restricted until the Archives is given a consent form, signed by the interviewees. There are no other access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law.
