Collection contains records documenting the various activities and programs of the North Shore Milwaukee Branch of the American Association of University Women, an organization dedicated to advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

The American Association of University Women was created in 1881. The Wisconsin Division of AAUW was organized in 1921, and the North Shore Milwaukee Branch was established in 1967. The mission of the AAUW is advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

Activities of the AAUW North Shore Milwaukee Branch include discussions, programs, and scholarships. For many years the North Shore Milwaukee Branch funded the Beth Mason Scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the School of Information Studies (SOIS). The scholarship was established in memory of Elizabeth Mason, alumna and adjunct faculty member of SOIS, and is awarded to a female student, who preferably lives in the Milwaukee North Shore area.

The collection consists of board and branch meeting minutes, brochures, certificates, correspondence, scholarship information, association projects, such as the Girl Scouts' Sister-to-Sister Summit in 1998 and the Wisconsin Women: A Gifted Heritage book, treasurer reports, the Northshore Beacon newsletters, The Bulletin newsletters, the Badger Briefs newsletters, policies and bylaws, and photographs. The photographs, which date from 1991 to 2003, depict various conventions and installation dinners, a Lake Geneva outing from 1999, and other activities.

A cassette tape, created in 1981, recounting AAUW's history, is also included in the collection. Newspaper articles, dating from the 1980s to 1990s, document various meetings and workshops/conventions attended, and also focus on individual North Shore Milwaukee Branch members and association projects. Scrapbooks, dating from 1967 to 1993, provide more in-depth information about the association, and include photographs, mostly from conventions, dinners, and outings; newspaper articles; newsletters; convention materials; and member lists.

Acquisition Information

Sargit Waariner, Branch Historian of the North Shore Milwaukee AAUW, donated the collection to the Archives in May 2011 (accession 2010-048). Janet Quail donated additional materials in September 2017 (accession 2017-010).

Processing Information

Julie Hatfield (supervised by Christel Maass) processed the collection in February and March 2012. Christel Maass processed accession 2017-010 in September 2017.
