Biography/History

Founded in 1919, Curative was originally housed in a one-room cottage on the grounds of Columbia Hospital. Students enrolled in the occupational therapy course at the nearby Milwaukee-Downer College gained practical experience assisting at the Curative Workshop, as it was originally known. The workshop grew over the years, expanding its services and changing locations several times. It provided services for injured defense workers in 1941 and a speech clinic for injured WWII veterans in 1945.

Today Curative provides quality services to children, adults, and seniors at community-based sites in Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties. Its services include adult day, case management, child and youth, industrial, residential, senior, and vocational programs.

Scope and Content Note

In addition to meeting minutes and annual reports, the records of the Curative Care Network largely consist of audio-visual materials, including scrapbooks, photographs, slides, and negatives, as well as films and videos.

The photographs, arranged roughly chronologically, date from Curative's founding in 1919 to the 2000s. Photographs document adult, pediatric, home care, vocational, and speech therapy, and also include images of staff, events, and buildings.

The slides also date from Curative's beginnings until the mid-1990s, and document buildings, therapy, staff, and events. Also included are some slides from the Red Cross Institute for Crippled and Disabled Men, which document occupational equipment use and predate the establishment of Curative.

Several folders of negatives in the collection largely document events and activities, as well as some therapy techniques.

The scrapbooks, which contain materials dating from 1921 to 2003, document the history of Curative and its fund drives, particularly its 1939 building campaign. Older scrapbooks largely consist of newspaper clippings, while more recent ones also contain photographs, programs, brochures, correspondence, articles, newsletters, awards, licenses, and the like.

The collection also contains the files of Mrs. A.C. Eschweiler, Jr., which largely relate to the 1939 building fund drive, and include correspondence, brochures, news clippings, historic information about Curative, and financial information.

Finally, the collection includes educational and training films and videos dating from 1933 to 1982, showing physical, occupational, and workshop therapy for adults and children. Several videos document the history of Curative and include interviews, while others contain public service announcements and TV commercials.
