Papers of Roberto Hernandez, a prominent Latino leader in Milwaukee who helped establish the Spanish Speaking Outreach Institute (SSOI) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1970. Collection consists of photographs, articles, and other materials relating to his personal life and advocacy work.

Biography/History

Roberto Hernandez was a prominent Latino leader in Milwaukee in the 1970s. He was one of the first Latinos to enroll at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the 1960s, and he became a leading advocate for the creation of the Spanish Speaking Outreach Institute (SSOI) in 1970. He also worked with the State of Wisconsin, assisting with the creation of the State's first Migrant Worker's Act. Hernandez also worked in Minnesota and Texas, focusing on youth and community advocacy. He died in 1994 at the age of 50.

The collection contains photographs, articles, and other materials relating to Roberto Hernandez's work in Milwaukee, Minnesota, and Texas. The photographs depict family gatherings and community events that Hernandez helped to organize. The articles were written by Hernandez, addressing important issues in the Latino community, such as the negative ramifications of the adoption of English as a national language and the importance of foster care in the community.
