Biography/History

Will Fellows, born in 1957, grew up on the family farm near Evansville, Wisconsin. After completing undergraduate and graduate degrees at Cornell University, he returned to Wisconsin. He was living in Madison when he began working on the Gay Farm Boys Project. From 1992 to 1993, he interviewed seventy-five gay men from farming backgrounds. Fellows selected approximately half of the interviews for inclusion in a book and shaped the transcript material into autobiographical narratives, consulting with the interview subjects throughout the process to ensure authenticity. Farm Boys: Lives of Gay Men from the Rural Midwest was published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 1996. It was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award in 1997.

A play inspired by the book was written by Dean Gray and Amy Fox. Farm Boys has been produced in New York (2004, Blue Heron Theatre), St. Paul (2006, Great American History Theatre), and San Francisco (2007, New Conservatory Theatre).

Will Fellows and his life partner, Bronze Quinton, have been Milwaukee residents since 1994. Fellows's second book, A Passion to Preserve: Gay Men as Keepers of Culture, was published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2004. It was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award in 2005.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of source material created and compiled by Will Fellows while researching his book, Farm Boys: Lives of Gay Men from the Rural Midwest.

The richest sources of information are oral history interviews conducted by Will Fellows from 1992 to 1993. Interviewees discuss their childhood backgrounds, the attitudes and beliefs of their family members, and their experiences of coming out to themselves and others. The oral histories include both interview recordings and general files. The files typically include correspondence with, photographs of, and biographical information about interviewees, and interview transcripts.

Cross References Between Interviewees' Pseudoyms and Names

Many of these individuals agreed to the public disclosure of their personal identities when granting Will Fellows permission to donate their interviews to the UWM Libraries. Morse, Frank, 1992-1994
Biography/History: “Born in 1955, Frank was one of seven children on a small livestock and crop farm near Poynette, in Columbia County, in south-central Wisconsin. He was married and the father of one child. At the time of our interview, Frank lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He died in 1993 from AIDS-related causes. The farm where Frank grew up had very rocky soil. For several weeks each spring, Frank and his siblings had to pick the rocks from the fields, load them on a flatbed wagon, and haul them to a ditch. Many wagonloads of rocks were dumped in that ditch each spring, and the dulling, oppressive nature of that work haunted Frank for many years. In the last few years of his life, he made a kind of peace with that rock-picking and all that it represented by selecting colorful rocks from the farm of his childhood and hauling them to his home in Milwaukee to create borders in his backyard garden. This brief narrative describes Frank's relationship with his Father.” — Will Fellows, 1996
