Biography/History
The idea of creating a "safe space" for Milwaukee-area lesbians developed in late 1992 at a
West Side Dykes meeting. The four founding members of the West Side Dykes went on to form
the Lesbian Community Center Committee, which later became known as the Womyn's Cultural
Community Center. The organization sponsored movie nights, dances, and held other
fundraisers to raise money to purchase a building in which to house the community center.
The organization never accomplished its goal of establishing a lesbian-only center, and
eventually disbanded.
Scope and Content Note
The Womyn's Cultural Community Center was created in 1993 by a group devoted to
establishing a "safe space" for lesbians in Milwaukee. The collection contains flyers
advertising fundraisers, movie nights, dances, and other activities. Also included in the
collection are minutes, financial reports of fundraising activities, by-laws and articles of
incorporation, as well as an article about the organization's formation.
