Abstract:
The collection features materials that date from the founding of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP) in 1967. It primarily consists of papers and reports from the executive level of the ASAHP, including minutes from executive committee meetings and board of directors meetings, as well as the comprehensive agenda books that were distributed at the latter. The collection also reflects the publishing activities of ASAHP as represented in the Journal of Allied Health, Allied Health Trends (later Trends), ASAHP Update, and the many reports and findings produced by the ASAHP throughout its existence. The collection also contains occasional committee reports, ASAHP photographs, and materials from the annual conference.

Biography/History

The ASAHP is a not-for-profit national professional association for administrators, educators, and others who are concerned with critical issues affecting allied health education. The phrase "allied health" was popularized during the deliberations which led to the passage of the Allied Health Professions Personnel Training Act in 1967. The passage of this act brought about a new and radical concept of unifying all the various disciplines that make up "allied health" into academic programs with single administrative units.

ASAHP was founded in 1967 under the leadership of Darrel Mase, Ph.D., of the University of Florida. Dr. Mase and thirteen deans of allied health education programs convened at the University of Kentucky to develop the by-laws of the new association and elected Dr. Mase its first president. In 1968, ASAHP held its first annual meeting with nearly five hundred delegates in attendance. Through the efforts of Dr. Mase and others, ASAHP was awarded a major five-year grant to support its establishment and growth by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. Also during that first year a national office for the Association was established in Washington, D.C.

In November of 1972, ASAHP began publishing the Journal of Allied Health. Then, seeking to provide a unified voice for allied health, not only for educational institutions, but also for professional organizations, clinical services and others, the association changed its name in 1973 to the American Society of Allied Health Professions.

In 1991, ASAHP members voted to return the organization to its roots by revising its by-laws and returning to the original name as a means of achieving its mission of enhancing the effectiveness of education for the allied health professions.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains a complete run of the Journal of Allied Health, the official scholarly publication of the organization, and nearly complete runs of Trends, its monthly newsletter, and ASAHP Update, a bi-weekly summary of information pertaining to legislation, health policies, and funding opportunities. Trends was published as Allied Health Trends from March 1969 to December 1982/January 1983.

The board of directors' agenda books summarize much of the communication and work undertaken by the association as a whole. The agenda books span from 1978 to 1989, but contain several gaps. Many of the books were maintained in their original order. The rest were collected as a combination of working files and partially collected books. Every attempt has been made to recreate the original order of the actual agenda books, but in some cases this was impossible.

The early history of the ASAHP is preserved in the form of four volumes of minute books (indicated in the box/folder list as volumes 1-4), which contain the minutes of the earliest executive committee meetings, 1967-1978, and board of directors meetings, 1970-1978. Other than the minutes from the 29th and 30th executive committee meetings, these holdings are complete. The volumes also contain the minutes of general membership meetings, 1968-1969, institutional membership meetings, 1968-1971, and a special executive committee meeting, 1969.

The collection also contains board of directors meeting minutes (unbound) from 1979 to 1989 with some gaps at the beginning and the end of this period.

Many publications that ASAHP created, or to which it contributed, are also included in the collection. These publications cover a wide range of health care concerns, as well as concerns of ASAHP member institutions, and the topic of accreditation of allied health care schools is quite prominent.

The collection contains a nearly complete holding of programs from annual conferences. Some years' holdings feature reports and photographs from the meeting, but the majority of the conference materials are represented by a program from the event. The collection contains the annual conference materials from the 1st meeting in 1968 to the 32nd meeting in 1999, with gaps for the years 1969-1971, 1974, and 1977.

Michael Doylen and Richard Shrake processed the collection at the Archives in February-March 2000. Bob Carter processed accessions 2001-113 and 2001-134 in July 2002. Ann Stachewicz updated the finding aid and added some publications to the collection in December 2004. Ashley VonRuden (supervised by Christel Maass) processed accessions 2005-045 and 2009-058, as well as several journals that had been mailed to the Archives, in June 2010 (boxes 34-35). Christel Maass added some additional journals to the collection in April 2015 (box 36).
