Abstract:
Collection contains records of an organization, established in 1982, to improve the quality of life and stability of the neighborhood, insure the quality and security of neighborhood housing, foster business growth and development, and build an educational environment that serves the needs of adults and children in the area. Included are files on committee meetings, projects and meeting minutes. The files "Avenues West" contain all committee reports, meeting minutes and material for the particular year. The collection also contains a video, The Avenues West Story, originally created in 1987 by WISN-TV.

Biography/History

The Avenues West Neighborhood Association was established in 1982. The association represents a 90-block section of Milwaukee immediately west of downtown. It is a partnership of area institutions, business interests, church groups, schools, and individuals. The association exists to improve the quality of life and the stability of the neighborhood, foster business growth and development, insure the quality and security of neighborhood housing, and build an educational environment that serves the needs of adults and children.

This collection was received in, and is organized in, multiple parts. Additional materials have not been physically or intellectually arranged and interfiled, and researchers may need to consult more than one part of the collection to locate similar materials.

The files are organized alphabetically by personal name, name of office, or by subject, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, staff memos, meeting minutes and reports.

Abstract: Additions of materials, dating from 1986 to 2004, largely focus on development and revitalization in Milwaukee's Avenues West area. Included are neighborhood studies, strategic plans, revitalization and development studies, as well as information on the 1994 Marquette University "Avenue Commons" proposal to close part of Wisconsin Avenue. The collection also contain materials related to crime and policing, neighborhood partnerships and strategies, and housing. Some materials in the collection were produced by or in conjuction with UWM.
