Abstract:
The collection is largely made up of photographs depicting the "human chess games," organized by Meyer Fishman after his release from the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, which entertained fellow Holocaust survivors awaiting resettlement. Other photographs are of Meyers' Food Bulk Store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Also contains negatives of all the prints found in the collection.

Biography/History

Meyer Fishman, born on 30 January 1914 in Europe, was a prisoner in at least two concentration camps during World War II. As a survivor from the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, Fishman organized "human chess games" as a recreational activity for others survivors awaiting resettlement. The Fishmans moved to Canada following World War II, staying there for a few years before relocating to the United States with family. Meyers' Food Bulk Store located at 2405 North Third Street opened in 1964 and remained in business until 1974. Meyer Fishman died in August 1976.

Acquisition Information

Mrs. Freida Fishman and her son William Fishman donated the collection to the Archives in February 1994. Mrs. Fishman signed a deed for gift for the collection on 4 February 1994.


Processing Information

Angela R. Cisco processed the collection at the Archives in July-December 1994.

In November 2011, Bob Jaeger removed 4 safety film negatives and placed them with other safety film negatives.
