Charlotte Russell Partridge, a professor and head of the Fine Arts Department at Milwaukee Downer College, and her friend, Miriam Frink founded the Layton School of Art (often called the Layton School of Art and Design) in 1920. Partridge and Frink served as co-directors until 1954. Subsequent directors were Edmund Lewandowski (1954-1972) and Neil Lieberman (1972-1974). The School grew to a four-year accredited institution with a peak enrollment of about 1,500 after World War II and closed in 1974 due to financial difficulties.

The materials in the collection are restricted in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (U. S. Code Title 20, Chapter 31, Sec. 1232g).

Acquisition Information

Upon the closing of the Layton School of Art in 1974, Ms. Blythe Casper, staff secretary at Layton, volunteered to keep the transcripts and respond to requests from former students for copies of their records. Ms. Casper transferred the collection to the Golda Meir Library in 1987.

Processing Information

Robert Garrett processed the collection at the Archives in July 1994.
