Abstract:
Records relating to the activities of the Office of Equity/Diversity Services, formerly the Office of Diversity/Compliance and the Equal Opportunity Office. The records include affirmative action plans created by individual colleges and divisions, UWM-wide affirmative action plans and drafts, the text of the 1993 Conciliation Agreement with the Office of Federal Contractor Compliance Programs (OFCCP), reports showing efforts to hire minority faculty, anonymous logs of discrimination case activity, and documentation related to affirmative action workshops. The collection also contains correspondence relating to the implementation of the affirmative action plans and the creation and revision of UWM's non-discrimination policy.

Biography/History

The Equal Opportunity Office was renamed the Office of Diversity/Compliance in 1995, to reflect the increased scope of the office's responsibilities in conjunction with the hiring of its new director, Assistant Chancellor Charmaine Clowney. The office was a quasi-investigative body which received complaints of discrimination or sexual harassment from student, staff, or faculty and set up mediation sessions and hearings to resolve these complaints. During the period covered by this collection, the Office of Diversity/Compliance continued to administer the campus' affirmative action program, and was also responsible for administering the terms of 1993 OFCCP Conciliation Agreement, in which UWM pledged to make certain changes to improve diversity and climate on campus.

In 2000, as part of a general campus reorganization effort, the Office of Diversity/Compliance was renamed Equity/Diversity Services.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists largely of material from the late 1980s and early- to mid-1990s related to the Office of Equity/Diversity Services's ongoing creation and revision of affirmative action programs and redress of discrimination complaints. In addition to campus-wide affirmative action plans, the collection also contains diversity assessment plans from individual departments, describing the state of diversity in each department and the steps that each took to increase that diversity. A number of these report folders contain Utilization Analyses, which break down the percentage of women and minorities in each position in a department, school, or division and compare it to the percentage in the greater workforce. Other folders include breakdowns of complaints handled by the office, with personally identifying information removed to anonymize these breakdowns for reporting purposes.

Also included in the collection are subject files describing the activities that led to the creation of the affirmative action plans. In addition to general correspondence files, the collection contains information on the campus-wide Affirmative Action Oversight Committee, the 1992-1993 Department of Justice Audit of UWM's diversity programs, studies of faculty workload and salary equity, and copies of The ADA and You, a newsletter distributed by the office to inform UWM employees of their responsibilities with regards to the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. The collection also includes drafts of UWM's Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Policies, with related correspondence and documentation.

Arrangement of the Materials

This collection was received in, and is organized in, multiple parts. Additional materials have not been physically or intellectually arranged and interfiled, and researchers may need to consult more than one part of the collection to locate similar materials.

The files are organized alphabetically by folder heading within each series, and thereunder chronologically.

Box 12 contains personally identifiable information related to sexual harassment and discrimination cases, and is thus restricted in accordance with UWM Personnel File Policy S-42. Access is regulated by Section III.A.2 and III.A.3.

Acquisition Information

The Office of Diversity/Compliance transferred accessions 1998-015 and 1998-039 to the Archives in 1998. The UWM Libraries' Reserve Services transferred accession 1999-063 in 1999. Equity/Diversity Services transferred accession 2001-053 in 2002. Linda Huang donated additional materials in October 2009 (accession 2009-022). Equity/Diversity Services transferred the 2014-2015 Campus Affirmative Action Report in July 2015 (accession 2015-007).
