Records documenting the operations and development of the Division of Administrative Affairs, including reports, correspondence, and meeting minutes. Also included are various handbooks on functions of the division, including a number of handbooks for Information Systems (which would eventually become Information and Media Technologies in 1993).

Biography/History

The Division of Administrative Affairs is the central department on campus for directing business functions, finance, facilities planning, and general administration. The division performs the accounting functions, plans for building construction and remodeling, maintains healthy and safe research environments, provides security and protective services, cleans and maintains the campus buildings and grounds, and ensures fiscal integrity of campus financial operations.

At the time the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was formed in 1956, the division was known as Business Affairs; the head of the division was given the title of director. In 1967, the division, still called Business Affairs, was placed under the authority of an assistant chancellor for business affairs. In 1974, the name of the division was changed to Administrative Affairs. In 2009, the name of the division was changed to Finance and Administrative Affairs.

Scope and Content Note

The records in this series document the processes by which the general business functions of UWM were administered. The records focus particularly on the 1960s through the 1970s, when William Komsi served as assistant chancellor of administrative affairs. Subjects of particular interest include: labor relations at UWM, including struggles between the university and AFL-CIO Local 82; UWM's acquisition of the Uihlein House in Milwaukee; and budget planning for the division.

This collection was received in, and is organized in, multiple parts. Additional materials have not been physically or intellectually arranged and interfiled, and researchers may need to consult more than one part of the collection to locate similar materials.

Acquisition Information

This collection was originally accessioned on an unknown date. Additional materials (including accession 1994-028) were transferred on an unknown date by unknown parties. Accession 1997-009 was transferred to the Archives in 1997; accession 1999-030 in 1999. Additional materials were transferred to the Archives sometime after 1999. The Divsion transferred additional materials in February 2016 (accession 2015-031).


Processing Information

Ryan Claringbole processed the collection at the Archives in June 2007. Brad Houston added some miscellaneous materials in November 2009, August 2013, and November 2014. Brad Houston minimally processed accession 2015-031 and Christel Maass updated the finding aid in April 2016. Ashlie Biddle moved the folders from box 5 to box 4 in November 2017.
