The Wisconsin State Normal School in Milwaukee opened in 1885 and in 1927 became the Milwaukee State Teachers College. The name changed in 1951 to the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee. In 1956, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was formed by the merger of the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin Extension Division.

An unknown donor donated the collection to the Archives prior to 1989.
