Abstract:

Consists mainly of newspaper clippings, press releases, and public service announcements relating to events sponsored by the UWM School of Fine Arts and the Departments of Art, Film, Music, and Theatre and Dance. Also includes playbills, brochures, flyers, and photographs for various theatrical and musical events. Other material includes information on the artists who participated in the Great Artist Series and the International Festival of the Art Song, and correspondence with Arts Midwest and the Wisconsin Arts Board.

The School of Fine Arts Office of Development and Marketing is responsible for the planning, advertising, and fund-raising for events sponsored by the School of Fine Arts and its Departments of Art, Film, Music, and Theatre and Dance. Events include the Great Artist Series, the Fine Arts Quartet, the International Festival of the Art Song, and the Professional Theatre Training Program. The office began as the Fine Arts Programming Office in 1960. In 1994 the name was changed to the Office of Development and Marketing to reflect the additional responsibility of fund-raising.

The largest part of the collection consists of news clippings and press releases regarding the groups, programs, and events sponsored by the UWM School of Fine Arts and its Departments of Art, Film, Music, and Theatre and Dance. Included are news clippings for the years 1960-1995 and press releases for 1981-1995. The news clippings and press releases are located under the name of the department and also under Fine Arts Programming. Not all departments have news clippings and press releases for all of these years. The sources for the new clippings are mainly the Milwaukee Journal, the Milwaukee Sentinel, and the UWM Post.

The files on the Great Artist Series (1989-1996) consist of correspondence, contracts, news clippings, photos, and other information on the artists, mostly musical groups and dance troupes, who gave performances.

The collection also includes playbills, brochures, and programs for theatre, dance, and music productions; correspondence with Arts Midwest and the Wisconsin Arts Board, which provided funding for many events undertaken by the School of Fine Arts; information on the plays performed by the Northern Stage Company and the Professional Theatre Training Program; and Fine Arts Quartet performance information.

Acquisition Information

Mark Eagon transferred the records to the Archives in February 1997 (accession 1996-028). Ellen Hanlon transferred additional records to the Archives in October of 1998 (accession 1998-024). Ellen Ash transferred accession 2008-035 to the Archives in November 2008.

Processing Information

Kathy Koch processed the 1996-028 accession in February and March 1997. Diana Giordano processed the 1998-024 accession in January 2006. Matt Shoemaker processed the 2008-035 accession in December 2008 (Brad Houston supervised). Charles Welborn processed additional material in July 2012.
