Abstract:
Records of a campus-wide committee that directed the development of new and existing instructional units, programs, courses, and curricular matters. The collection contains correspondence, minutes, and inter-departmental memos documenting new course proposals, the creation of new departments, and changes in course descriptions. Records prior to the formation of UW-Milwaukee in 1956 consist of general reports and recommendations on curricula for the Milwaukee State Teacher's College and the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee. Of particular interest are the audits and reviews of various colleges, schools, and departments within the university and the Ten-Year Plan (1974-1984) which was intended to guide UWM into the future. In later materials, one can also see attempts to bring academic programs in line with the "Milwaukee Idea."

Biography/History

The Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee established a Curriculum Committee around 1950. The committee was renamed the Course and Curriculum Committee in 1964 and the Academic Program and Curriculum Committee in October 1970. The committee consisted of at least ten faculty members representing the various schools and colleges within the university, one student (as of 1966), and one member of the Dean's Council (as of 1971 at the latest). A new chairperson was selected approximately every two years by the committee and the group was accountable to the UWM faculty as a whole. Much of the work was dispersed among a variety of subcommittees which formed depending on the needs of the university.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of the vice provost's (1956-1965), vice chancellor's (1965-1998), and Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs' files in regards to the development, maintenance, and revision of academic programing at UWM. The collection primarily consists of audits and reviews of the various academic programs, performed both inter-departmentally as well as by outside review boards formed by UWM. There are also a large amount of reviews created by academic professionals unaffiliated with UWM evaluating the merits of existing and proposed programs. The specific departments targeted in this review include, but are not limited to: the Center for Teacher Education; College of Engineering and Applied Science; College of Letters & Science; Computing Services Division; Division of Urban Outreach; International Business Center; College of Health Sciences; School of Architecture and Urban Planning; Lubar School of Business; School of Education; Peck School of the Arts; School of Information Studies; College of Nursing; and School of Social Welfare.

The Subject Files series consists of those records not related to any particular department. Minutes of the APCC, as well as of its constituent subcommittees, may be found in this series, as are numerous files describing the APCC's efforts to build and rebuild the General Educational Requirements program for undergraduates. Also in this series is a ten-year plan for UWM's curriculum as a whole during the 1970s and early 1980s, as well as general correspondence between committee members.

The Departmental Files series contains all files concerning individual schools, colleges, and departments. Most of these files include general curriculum correspondence, audit reports (if applicable), self-study reports, accreditation files, and files relating to program establishment. Some of the departmental files also include publicity material from the departments as part of the evaluation of that department's curriculum.

An unknown donor transferred the original collection to the Archives prior to 1993. The Vice-Chancellor's Office transferred additional materials in August 2012 (Accession 2012-019).
