Biography/History

In 1965 the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee received a grant from the United States Office of Education to establish an undergraduate NDEA Center for Latin American Studies. The Language and Area Center for Latin America formally opened in September 1965 in Garland Hall, with the director reporting to the dean of the College of Letters & Science. The center changed its name to the Center for Latin America in 1974. In 1981 the center moved its headquarters to Curtin Hall. The center changed its name again in 2000 to the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

The center's primary function is to promote, develop, and financially support teaching and research on Latin America both at the graduate and undergraduate level. Since 1967 the center has published extensively with several series of original essays, reprints, and papers.

Scope and Content Note

Records of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, including correspondence, meeting minutes, planning documents, and publications of the Center. Most of the collection consists of discussion papers written by UWM professors and several scholars from outside the university and published by the center from 1969 to 1985. The discussion papers mainly address economic issues and theories and their pertinence within Latin America, although several papers focus on political and cultural issues. The center also published several newsletters and distributed the research findings of its members in essays, reprints, and pamphlets which are also included in the collection.

The correspondence files (1958-1976) mostly consist of letters from the directors concerning staff, budget, course and curriculum development, and other center activities. The advisory committee and faculty meeting minutes also document courses, staff, budget, research, and other activities from 1958 to 1975. The planning documents (1969-1983) discuss grants, courses, migrant workers, and a suggestion for a Midwest Language and Area Study Program.

Of interest in the most recent addition to the collection (boxes 5-7) are files created to assist teachers at UWM and elsewhere incorporate materials on Latin American studies in their curriculum, as well as grant proposal documents describing the activities of the Center over three-year grant periods. The proposals also include information about budget proposals for the center and its collaboration with similar centers at UW-Madison.
