Abstract:
Audio cassette recordings of interviews with twelve former Milwaukee Public School administrators, teachers and seven former students, conducted as part of a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) History Department research project examining the decline of Milwaukee public schools. The interviews provide information on various perspectives of changes, dating from the 1920s through the 1980s, on the administration of the schools; modernization of the curriculum; the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association; student attitudes, discipline, and social life; parental involvement; race relations, especially for African American teachers; and public support for education. The collection also contains written abstracts of the interviews, but no verbatim transcriptions were written. Copies are available for most of interviews.

Biography/History

In 1988, the Marshall & Ilsley Corporation provided a grant to UWM to prepare a history of the Milwaukee Public Schools since 1920. UWM assigned Frank Cassell (chair of the History Department) and Sam Yarger (dean of the School of Education) to administer the project. In May 1989, they appointed Michael Gordon of the History Department to coordinate an oral history component for the project. Between 1989 and 1990, Gordon and several graduate students conducted nineteen interviews. The project's final report was published as Seeds of Crisis: Public Schooling in Milwaukee Since 1920 (Madison: University of Wisconsin, 1993).

Arrangement of the Materials

The cassettes are organized alphabetically by personal name. Duplicate copies of the interviews are housed in box 5.
