Abstract:

Miscellaneous records, mostly dating from the 1950s to the 1960s. The majority of the collection consists of departmental meeting minutes and chronological correspondence files containing letters to and from the chair, department faculty, and the dean of the College of Letters & Science. The files document issues such as the budget, curriculum development, the graduate program, staffing, and relations with the Department of Zoology and the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of Biology. The collection is particularly useful in documenting the early administration and development of the department.

The Dept. of Botany was founded as an academic program at the University of Wisconsin-Extension in Milwaukee in 1932. With the establishment of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1956, the program moved under the administration of the College of Letters & Science.

Acquisition Information

An unknown individual transferred the initial collection to the Archives prior to 1989. The provenance of the collection is unclear, and it is not known if the records were gathered together from several sources. Additional accessions were donated by former Department Chair Dr. Forest Stearns (1993-014, 1994-004, 1995-037, 1996-013, 1996-043, and 1996-050).

Processing Information

Mark A. Vargas processed the initial collection at the Archives in December 1993. Ryan Claringbole processed the additional accessions in April 2007.
