Abstract:

Contains the papers and documents of UWGB’s radio station, WGBW, from 1971 to 1989. Included is the history of the station starting in 1973, then jumping to 1979 through 1984. To go along with this is the station’s application to and license from the FCC in 1973 and 1974 as well as the license’s renewal from 1976 to 1989. Other interesting documents cover the stations violations of the FCC’s rules on obscenity. The first, dubbed the “July Affair”, occurred in 1985 and discusses the playing of a “radical” band and the aftermath of its’ airing. The second controversy, called the “Smith Affair”, discusses the takeover of WGBW by Wisconsin Public Radio in 1989. Other documents include the annual report in 1976, various correspondences from 1971 to 1986, construction permits from 1973, staff ideas from 1975 and 1976, mission statements from 1978, 1986, and 1988, newspaper clippings, program guides from 1978 to 1985, program logs from 1974 and 1975, program schedules from 1986 to 1989, programming from 1974, proposals from 1970 and 1973, questionnaires from 1970 to 1972, staff meetings from 1973 to 1975 and 1985 to 1986, staff rosters from 1979 to 1986, advisory task force records from 1984 to 1985, transmitter logs from 1974, UWGB SBA (Small Business Administration) records from 1975, and weekly reports from 1976.
