Biography/History
Clinton R. Edwards was born on April 26, 1926 in Washington, D.C., and was raised in
California. Edwards joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served until 1947. He attended
the University of California, Berkeley, earning his bachelor's, master's, and
doctoral degrees in geography there. He taught at the University of Virginia for a
few years before moving to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1966. He
remained at UWM for 35 years, and retired in 2001. Edwards chaired the Geography
Department from 1972-1975, and was one of the voices that advocated bringing the
American Geographical Society Library to Milwaukee. Edwards died on November 24,
2009.
Edwards' research, squarely in the Carl Sauer academic tradition, focused upon
primitive watercraft and their relevance to cultural processes; early maritime
technology and its role in discovery; and eventually, the nature and process of
discovery itself. The regional emphasis was Latin America, especially the
Yucatán Peninsula. One of his focuses in particular was Christopher Columbus
and the discovery of the New World, and he also did extensive work with the Relaciones Geográficas. In these matters he was a
recognized authority, partly because his inquiry was deeply informed by his lifelong
experience as a master boat-builder and blue water sailor.

Series: 3. Relaciones Geográficas,
1959-1974The Relaciones Geográficas are a
remarkable testament to the efforts by the Spanish Crown to compile and
systematize basic information about its New World colonies. Beginning with a
questionnaire of 50 items in the 1570s (later ballooning to more than 300 in
the 1580s) regarding a wide range of natural, cultural, and demographic
phenomena, the administrative responses provide an extraordinary accounting
of peoples and places encountered in the process of conquest and
colonization. While they were given out in order for the Spanish to govern
more effectively, they can now be considered an early statistical study of
the New World. This collection consists of manuscript copies of most of the surviving Relaciones Geográficas known at the time
(1970s), personally garnered from the General Archive of the Indies
(Seville), major University Libraries, and other sources by Edwards. Also
included are Edwards' descriptions, notes, and analyses of the materials,
reprints of his publications, and ancillary materials, primarily reprints of
significant scholarly treatments of the Relaciones
Geográficas and their context. Especially noteworthy are
papers of historian Howard Cline, long-time Director of the Hispanic
Foundation of the Library of Congress, whose interest in the Relaciones Geográficas is reflected in his
publications, and especially in a copy of his card catalogue of relevant
documents from the General Archive of the Indies.
