At the urging of the Retired Geographers Organization, with support of the History of Geography Specialty Group and several Association of American Geographers presidents, these 75 geography department histories were solicited, collected, and organized by Dr. Malcolm Comeaux, assisted by Dr. Janice Monk. Their goal was to detail the history of geography departments at universities in the United States and Canada.

The collection primarily contains reprints of articles, especially from regional journals such as the Yearbook of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers, about the history of geography departments at various universities. Manuscripts and other ephemera are included in some of the files as well.

The files are organized alphabetically by name or by subject, then chronologically.

Malcolm Comeaux donated this collection to the American Geographical Society Library in 2007.

Processing Information

Norman Stewart processed the collection which was originally placed in with the Association of American Geographers Records (AGSL Mss 23). Since then, the AGSL processed this as a separate manuscript collection.
