These scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings documenting
worldwide travel, exploration, trade, and peoples. Cyrus C. Adams appears to have
authored many of the articles and compiled these scrapbooks. English

Biography/History
Cyrus Cornelius Adams (1849-1928) was a journalist who graduated from the University
of Chicago in 1876. In 1880 he joined the staff of the American Geographical Society
(AGS). At this time he was also was associated with the New York Sun and contributed articles on African and Arctic
exploration. In the 1890s he edited the short-lived Goldthwaite's Geographical Magazine. Adams was the first head of the
Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences' Department of Geography, and also served as
the second president of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) in 1905. Adams
also edited the AGS Bulletin, serving as associate
editor from 1902-1908 and editor from 1908-1915.
Scope and Content Note
These scrapbooks contain articles clipped from newspapers and The Home Journal written and/or compiled by Cyrus C. Adams. The
articles largely document travel and exploration. While the earlier scrapbooks focus
on exploration at a more general, international level, the later scrapbooks focus
more heavily on Africa and include articles on the expeditions of Henry Morton
Stanley. Other articles focus on trade, including the railroads, petroleum,
minerals, gems, and slavery; and peoples, including Mormons, Indian tribes, and
cannibals.

donor.
The American Geographical Society (AGS) donated these scrapbooks to the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries in 1978 as part of its entire map
and library collections.
Denise Gergetz (supervised by Christel Maass, UWM Libraries' Archives Dept.)
processed the collection in October 2009.
