Isaiah Bowman's Scrapbooks on Political Geography (Volumes 1-5) consist primarily of newspaper and magazine clippings related to political geography and international relations, collected in connection with subjects covered in his book The New World: Problems in Political Geography. Volumes 6-15 are geography books owned by Isaiah Bowman and the Bowman family.

Biography/History

Isaiah Bowman was born in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada on December 26, 1878. He was an American geographer, educated at both Harvard and Yale. Bowman was the director of the American Geographical Society from 1915 to 1935. He was also a chief territorial advisor during World War I. His book The New World: Problems in Political Geography, published in 1921, is one of his notable works. Bowman passed away in Baltimore in 1950.

Scope and Content Note

The Scrapbooks on Political Geography consist primarily of newspaper and magazine clippings focusing on Europe, Asia, and Africa. The clippings are mostly from The New York Times, The Literary Digest, The New Republic, and The Nation.

Custodial History

Isaiah Bowman donated the scrapbooks (Volumes 1-5) to the American Geographical Society (AGS) on August 31, 1933. The American Geographical Society (AGS) donated these scrapbooks to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries in 1978 as part of its entire map and library collections. Books owned by Isaiah Bowman and members of the Bowman family (Volumes 6-15) came to the American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) as a donation from the Bowman Family in 2023.
