Biography/History
The exhibit Six Decades: the News in Pictures was put on in 1976 to highlight the
best photos taken by the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Sentinel photographers. The newspapers were
responsible for many innovations in photojournalism and received many awards since
the start of photojournalism at the Milwaukee Journal
by Robert Taylor in 1909. Many photojournalists are included in the collection, with
only a selection mentioned below.
These individuals include Frank Scherschel, who helped to modernize the paper’s photo
department. He added more photographers, obtained modern equipment, and shepherded
in the first color photographs in the Milwaukee
Journal. These photos appeared in the Sunday Rotogravure section and
were taken by Jules Rogas. Robert Dumke and Edward Farber were pioneers of
photography in the 1930s and 1940s. Dumke developed run of paper (ROP) color
photography, while Farber invented the use of portable strobe lighting for
photography. These innovations helped make the Milwaukee
Journal internationally famous.
Scope and Content Note
The 192 black and white photos in this collection are reproduced on 8” x 10” photo
paper. The original photos may or may not have been this size. Many of the
photographs are of people and places in Milwaukee and the surrounding areas. There
are also photos from around the nation, and international photos as well, though
those number in the minority. Not every photo that appeared in the exhibit is in
this collection. The information for the photos that do not appear can be found in
the exhibit catalog Six Decades: The News in
Pictures.
Arrangement of the Materials
The collection was received with individual photos contained in plastic sleeves in
binders. Photos were removed from the binders and sleeves and placed in acid-free
folders in archival boxes. The photos were in no particular order in the binders, so
the decision was made to arrange the photographs alphabetically by photographer.
Some folders contain more than one photo.
