This collection is a visual inventory of the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) buildings from 1968-1976. During this time, an aerial photograph was taken of each school in the MPS system.

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) was created in 1846. In its early years, most of the schools in the system were grades 1-8; kindergartens and high schools came later. A Board of School Directors provides leadership and oversight, with a superintendent heading the system. Members for the board were originally selected by the Milwaukee Common Council, but are now publicly elected. The first superintendent was Rufus King, who was chosen in 1859. Today, MPS is the largest school system in Wisconsin with 165 schools, including neighborhood schools, specialty schools, and charter schools. MPS is also one of the largest school systems by enrollment in the nation.

This collection contains 223 5” x 7” black and white photographs of the buildings that belonged to MPS from 1968-1976. All of the photos were taken from the air by aerial photographer Clair Wilson. The vast majority of the photographs are of schools, but since this is a visual inventory of all buildings owned by MPS, photos of the administration building and warehouses are included as well. The original inventory was taken in 1968 and additional photos were added on several occasions. Multiple photos exist for some schools.

The collection is arranged by site number. The collection was received in an old binder and the photos and descriptions were mounted on construction paper within the binder. The photos and descriptions were removed and placed in acid-free envelopes with original order retained.

Acquisition Information

Donated to the Historic Photo Archives by the Wisconsin Architectural Archives (WAA), date unknown. Thomas Eschweiler of the WAA received it in December 1968 when he was an architect for the Milwaukee Public Schools system. It was one of ten sets that went out from the Purchasing Division. Materials were accessioned as a Historic Photo Collection.
