Biography/History

“Remember When” was a feature that appeared in the Milwaukee Journal’s Green Sheet starting in November of 1963 and ending in 1994. It was comprised of a photograph and a caption describing life in early Milwaukee. The photograph was usually pulled from the Historic Photo Archives at the Milwaukee Public Library. As “Remember When” gained in popularity however, library patrons would occasionally send photos to – what was then called – the Local History Department if they thought the images might make an interesting article. In most cases, these photos were only on loan and copy prints would be made of them and they would be sent back to the patrons. The articles that accompanied the photographs were researched and written by the librarians who worked at the Local History Department. Originally the feature appeared twice a week in the Green Sheet. In 1981 the frequency of the column was reduced to once a week. “Remember When” also led to MPL’s first digital collection (see Alternate Format below).

Scope and Content Note

The Remember When Collection is comprised of 2,279 images that appeared in the Milwaukee Journal. Most of these images are black and white photographs, though some postcards (in color and black and white), drawings, and prints were also included. The images range in dimension between 3” x 4” and 8” x 10” inches. Oversize photos are any images that have dimensions bigger than 8” x 10”. A number of the images in the collection are copy prints. Copy negatives were also made for the majority of the photos and images. Most of the negatives are between 1” x 2” and 4” x 5”, though there are a number of oversized negatives between the size of 5” x 7” and 8” x 10”. See the appendix below for a detailed list of the articles. Occasionally, the title of the article was shortened to simply "Remember..."

Arrangement of the Materials

The images are arranged by format and size, then in the chronological order in which the articles appeared in the Milwaukee Journal. These numbers were created by MPL. There are separate runs for each format (print, negative, article). For each article there is a photocopy of the original article as it appeared in the newspaper and they are mounted on a board. This is not a complete set; some photos or negatives are missing.
